Last week, another natural gas project to replace Indian Point’s power was announced. North Bergen Liberty Generating Project, if approved, would produce 1,200 megawatts annually for the sole purpose of replacing the 2,000 megawatts lost by Indian Point’s closure.
However, this massive plant would be located in Bergen County, New Jersey, meaning that the jobs and economic revenue lost through Indian Point’s closure would not be replaced in-state.
It’s important that we replace Indian Point’s power with reliable, affordable energy, but it’s just as vital to provide jobs and tax dollars to the downstate region. Importing energy from New Jersey means exporting the jobs and economic revenue that New York needs. New York elected officials should take a page from New Jersey’s book and focus on building large-scale energy sources here in the Empire State.
